As a journalist and photographer I spend long hours at my desk, or out in the field with several kilos of camera equipment hanging on one shoulder. Then there are the hours sat in the car or squashed into plane seats. It’s not a good way to treat your body. Osteopathy helped when the inevitable problems became so bad I could hardly function, but did not address the root cause. Working with Alexander Technique teacher Hilary Cook has given me the knowledge to avoid those problems, allowing me to continue my work and life, to manage those less than ideal situations that we have to live with.

Lessons with a teacher? If that sounds scary, ignore the terminology. Alexander Technique is calm and gentle, the most relaxing thing in my life and lessons with Hilary Cook have taught me how to be aware of how to sit, stand, live in a way that makes good use of my body, that does not abuse my back. And in those inevitable situations where there is no option but to squash my six-foot-three into a small seat or to work at a low desk, I know what that is doing to me and how to sort it out again afterwards.
